The Story of The Play Cafe

This is more than coffee.

More than a play space.

It’s a community,
built on care, connection,

and the belief that we’re all better when we help each other out.

The idea for The Play Cafe was born long before the doors ever opened, back when Jessie and Ilham were working with children, long before they became moms themselves. They spent years in classrooms, playrooms, and on playgrounds, learning just how important it is for children to have spaces that are safe, stimulating, and joyful. Just as importantly, they saw how vital it is for parents to feel seen, supported, and connected.

When they became mothers, the need became even more personal. They found themselves constantly searching for a place where their kids could explore and play freely, without overstimulation or chaos, while they could relax, sip a really good cup of coffee, and maybe even finish a full conversation with another adult.

That place didn’t quite exist.
So they built it.

The Play Cafe is the space they always wished they had. A thoughtfully designed environment where children can play in a developmentally appropriate setting that is safe, open ended, and full of opportunities for imagination, while caregivers can breathe, connect, and enjoy coffee made just the way they like it.

But more than that, The Play Cafe was built to be a place where families could grow together.

From day one, Jessie and Ilham envisioned it as a place where families could find not just fun, but support. A space where parents can share stories, learn about helpful resources, and lean on one another. A place that welcomes the messiness of real life and offers connection in its most honest, human form.
Here, we don’t just play—we show up for each other. That’s why we’re committed to hosting parenting workshops, family events, birthday parties, and meetups. It’s why we collect and redistribute donations like clothing, gear, and books for families who need a little extra. And it’s why we partner with lactation consultants, doulas, therapists, and other care providers—because no one should feel like they’re figuring this out alone.

At The Play Cafe, everyone belongs. Whether you come for a cup of coffee, a safe space to play, a conversation, or a sense of connection, you’re welcome here.

Ilham

A woman smiling outdoors with green trees in the background, wearing a light green blouse, gold hoop earrings, and holding a colorful bouquet of flowers.

Ilham is a proud Cambridge resident, a connector at heart, and a parent to a high-energy toddler who has redefined her understanding of joy, resilience, and community.

As an immigrant, Ilham deeply values belonging and the richness that comes from sharing traditions, stories, and everyday moments. She loves good coffee, delicious food (especially pastries!), and creating spaces where people can gather — to play, relax, share a meal, or simply feel at home. With a background in early childhood and strong community ties, Ilham brings a lens of equity and care to every detail of The Play Café.

Whether she’s hosting a community dinner, planning a playdate, or greeting new faces at the playground, Ilham is always thinking about how to make everyone feel seen, supported, and included.

For Ilham, building The Play Café isn’t just about play — it’s about nurturing a village

Jessie

Jessie was born and raised in the vibrant city of Cambridge and has spent over two decades nurturing children under the age of four. Now raising a curious toddler of her own, she fully embraces the joyful chaos of early childhood every day.

With a heart for community and a genuine appreciation for the power of connection, Jessie is passionate about creating spaces where families feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Her approach is rooted in the magic of play-based learning. Where children lead the way through wonder, imagination, and hands-on exploration.

Whether she's setting up messy sensory bins, heading out for puddle-jumping adventures, or simply following a child’s spark of curiosity, Jessie sees play as the most powerful way children learn about their world. She finds joy in designing open-ended activities that invite creativity, collaboration, and discovery, where every child can explore at their own pace and in their own way.

For Jessie, each day at The Play Cafe is a new opportunity to explore, connect, and grow - together.
